Memory Aids is an approach that is designed to take advantage of the
brain/learning research and what children have been demonstrating
to us for quite some time. Children learn best when they are actively
engaged with the use of manipulatives, associations, rhymes and stories.
Help all students gain the numeracy skills they need for lifelong
learning. The approach used in memory aids provides young students
with the starting points needed to learn the basic math facts in addition,
subtraction and multiplication. Numeracy almost always begins with
games that require physical interaction with an adult - one, two,
buckle my shoe etc. When promoting learning, we often resort to stories,
rhymes and songs to help young children remember. Children comprehend
the rhymes, stories and patterns prior to learning the facts. Children
need to fully understand the concepts before they are able to commit
the facts to memory. Memory Aids has made excellent use of rhymes,
stories, pictures and and associations that ensure understanding of
concept is in place prior to the rote learning of the facts. Young
children will never forget the 'wand' (subtraction symbol) that makes
numbers disappear! Key to the learning process is ability to identify
the different associations. For instance, in learning sound/symbol
relationships, students often think of snakes for the letter 's',
or bed for 'b'. This program implements the strategies often used
successfully in early literacy and has applied them to math: 3 tea,
4 door etc.! A simple process with a proven track record! |
